چکیده

INTRODUCTION Direct detection of axonal neural magnetic fields (NMFs) by magnetic resonance imaging has met with conflicting evidence. Chow et al. reported a significant magnitude change in the human optic nerve and corpus callosum [1,2]. However, Park and Lee concluded that the modeled signal changes of axonal NMFs were negligible [3]. The objective of this study is to demonstrate the temporal signature of axonal NMFs in the free induction decay (FID), which provides the temporal resolution required to capture an axonal event. Simultaneous electrophysiology is used to time-lock earthworm action potentials to FID acquisition. The phase of the FID signal change is also simulated using an experimentally verified method for predicting the magnetic field generated by an axon [4]. Our data demonstrates clear evidence of a phase change that temporally corresponds to the electrophysiologically recorded action potential and is consistent to our theoretical predictions.

Functional MRI (fMRI) measures neural activity indirectly by detecting the signal change associated with the hemodynamic response following brain activation. In order to alleviate the temporal and spatial specificity problems associated with fMRI, a number of attempts have been made to detect neural magnetic fields (NMFs) with MRI directly, but have thus far provided conflicting results. In thi...

A Study of the Structure and Distribution of the Nexus

Nexuses, that is, fusions of plasma membranes of adjacent cells, are described in mammalian smooth and cardiac muscle, median giant axon of earthworm, frog skin, and rat submandibular gland. In smooth muscle they usually occur where a process from one cell either meets a process of, or projects into a neighboring cell. On the other hand, in mammalian heart muscle and in earthworm giant axon the...

Detection of power oscillation and simultaneous faults using Clark transform

Distance relays are widely used to protect transmission lines. Sometimes, in these lines due to the occurrence of the oscillation of the power, the impedance calculated in the distance relay enters into its functional zones and leads to the cutting off of the lines. This issue can cause global power outages. Accordingly, in this paper, a Clark-based method for detecting the oscillation of power...
